Miscelleneous Chemicals in Sanskrit

This is another part in a series of blog posts where I coin some chemical names in Sanskrit. In this blog, some commonly known chemicals like Acetone, Oxalate, etc. The idea is to move away from English words in Indian langauges, while not sacrificing unity. However, I do recomend trying to translate these words into vernacular languages as much as possible, because ultimately we want people to understand science and not get tripped up by jargon. Now in my previous blog on Cellular Respiration, I have coined some of these words on the fly. 

Acids

Here is what I have named so far: 

Acetate: चुक्रीय
Citrate: नैबूकीय
Succinate:धूनकीय
Malate: सेवफलीय
Fumerate: वर्मकण्टाकीय
Oxalate: लोलिकीय
Oxaloacetate:लौलिकिचुक्रीय
Lactate: क्षीरीय
Tartate: द्राक्षिकीय
Pyruvate: उपद्राक्षिकीय


Now technically, I can use name the acids by the functional groups and how many carbons they have, in many cases these names will get very long, so it is best to just calque these from the English names. 

Formic Acid is named since its found abundantly in ants, who spray it as a defense mechanism. Appropriately I will call this पिपीलकीय​. The Sanskrit IUPAC name is एकि-जलीय​-पल्लव​-अम्ल​, by the way. Next up is Valeric Acid which is found in the flowers of the Veleriana genus, thus लाघुमांषीय​

Another acid is Camphoric Acid, from camphor, obviosuly. Thus कर्पुरीय​. Then Benzanoic Acid from Benzoin Resin (शैलेयक​), thus शैलेयकीय​. Oleic Acid is a abundant fatty acid found in many oils, thus तैलकीय​. Another oil based acid is Linoleic Acid, from linseed oil, thus मसीनीय​.
From the sugar glucose, we have Gluconate or साच्छार्करीय​.

If you have watched skin care adds, you may have heard of Hyleraunic Acid, which is found abundantly in tissues, which in Hindi are called ऊतक्. Thus, ऊतकीय

Now, there are  three acids that derive from goats. Caprylic Acid, Capranoic Acid, and Capric Acid. I will thus call them: छागीय​, चेलकीय​, अजकीय​

Biology can also be gross, yet it is still vital to understand it. Uric Acid and Uronic Acids (they are a class) will be named मूत्रीय and मेहनीय, respectively.The chemical Urea, as a side note, will be called मूत्रद्रव्य or मौत्रक

Sterols and Sterones

These molecules have the Sterol group in common, which is 3 hexagons plus a pentagon, and on the first hexagon is an alcohol group. Because of their four rings, I will call them "four ringed alcohol" or "four ringed lipid", thus चतुश्चक्रिमद्य and चतुश्चक्रिस्नेह, respectively. 

The चतुश्चक्रि will be the specific 4 ring backbone, the Sterane.

Cholesterol is the most principle sterol, and as such I will call it "good sterol" सुचतुश्चक्रिस्नेह. The next one is Desmosterol, which resembles Cholesterol but has an alkane bond. Thus उपसुचतुश्चक्रिस्नेह. Another sterol I can think of is Ergosterol, which is derived from mushrooms, thus कवकचरुश्चक्रिस्नेह​. To conclude this section, use चतुर्वर्तुलि as a short hand for sterols, given their importance. 

A Sterone is चतुश्चक्रिप्राण्यकण्ठक (Sterane+Ketone). A short hand could be चतुःक​टक​ (also "four rings"). 

The sex horomomes tend to be sterones. You have the Androgens and Estrogens, which I will call पुंसद्रव्य and स्त्रीद्रव्य,respectively.  Testosterone is the primary androgen, it can be called प्र​पुंसचतुश्चक्रिप्राण्यकण्ठक or प्र​पुंसद्रव्य​. The female equivilant sterone is Estrone which is a minor estrogen (the major one is estradiol [प्रस्त्रीद्रव्य​]); it can be called नारीचतुश्चक्रिप्राण्यकण्ठक or नारीद्रव्य​. Estriol, is the third horomone, which I will just call महिलाद्रव्य​. The horomone Progesterone is a Progestergen (गर्भिणीद्रव्य​) and a prime one as well, mainly responsible for preventing pregnancy thus सुगर्भिणीचतुश्चक्रिप्राण्यकण्ठक  or सुगर्भिणीद्रव्य​

Moving on from sex horomones, the horomone Aldosterone is the prime horomone that promotes urine production, so I will call it प्रमूत्रचतुश्चक्रिप्राण्यकण्ठक or प्रमूत्रद्रव्य​. Another famous horomone is Cortisol, which is a sterone (the namesake's alcohol group is elsewhere), which has Cortesone as a precourser, I shall name the first after the fact that it promotes altertness, thus, सातर्क्यचतुश्चक्रिप्राण्यकण्ठक or सातर्क्यद्रव्य​. Then, Cortesone is just "pre-cortesol" or प्राक्सैतर्क्यचतुश्चक्रिप्राण्यकण्ठक or प्राक्सैतर्क्यद्रव्य

Finally, we have the live saving madicane Nalaxone or Narcan, which can reverse an opium (अहिफेन) overdose, thuss अहिफेनरक्षचतुश्चक्रिप्राण्यकण्ठक or अहिफेनरक्षद्रव्य. However, a short hand would be सुरक्षद्रव्य​, given its lifesaving importance.

Progesterogen: गर्भिणीद्रव्य
Progesterone: सुगर्भिणीचतुःक​ण्ठक or सुगर्भिणीद्रव्य
Aldosterone: प्रमूत्रचतुःक​ण्ठक or प्रमूत्रद्रव्य
Cortisol: सातर्क्यचतुःक​ण्ठक or सातर्क्यद्रव्य
Cortesone: प्राक्सैतर्क्यचतुःक​ण्ठक or प्राक्सैतर्क्यद्रव्य
Nalaxone: अहिफेनरक्षचतुःकण्ठक or अहिफेनरक्षद्रव्य or सुरक्षद्रव्य

Drugs

Now for the fun stuff. The first contender is Caffeine, which I will call "coffee amine" and "coffe substance", thus काह्वनावसार्य or काह्वद्रव्य or काह्वौषध​. ​
Another drug is Cocaine from the Coca plant which I will call कूकनावसार्य or कूकद्रव्य or कूकौषध​; yes I borrowed the Quechua word for the plant (kuka) into Sanskrit.

Then we have Methamphetamine, which now requires me to name the Phenethylamine-- प्रचक्रिद्वयिनावसार्य​. Then an Amphetamine structure is उपप्रचक्रिद्वयिनावसार्य​, as this derives from Phenethylamine. Thus Methamphetamine is एक्युपप्रचक्रिद्वयिनावसार्य​, and we can call it एक्युप-द्रव्य as a short hand.
